In 2007, archaeologists excavating the Areni-1 cave in the Vayots Dzor region found a complete winemaking installation dating to around 4,100 BC — the world's oldest known winery. Armenia, it turns out, didn't just adopt wine culture; it may have invented it.
The Areni grape is the indigenous variety that put the region back on the global wine map. Dark-skinned with high natural acidity, it produces wines that are earthy, mineral and age beautifully. The best bottles from producers like Zorah, Old Bridge and Tierras de Armenia are now on lists at Michelin-starred restaurants.
Visiting wineries: Most serious producers in Vayots Dzor receive visitors by appointment. Zorah's winery near Rind village is architecturally spectacular — built into a hillside above ancient terraces. Tierras de Armenia near Yeghegnadzor has a tasting room with views across the valley. Both offer vertical tastings that show how dramatically the region's wines have evolved in under a decade.
The Areni-1 cave itself is open to visitors. A guided tour takes about 45 minutes and includes the excavation site where the winery was found. The cave also contains Bronze Age human remains and evidence of ritual feasting — wine has always been more than just a drink here.
Harvest season (late September–early October) is the best time to visit. Many producers welcome visitors during the harvest, and the Areni Wine Festival — held on the first weekend of October — brings winemakers, chefs and thousands of visitors to the village for a weekend of tastings, music and traditional food.
